I had been taking molecular targeted therapy to prevent recurrence, but the side effects were severe and caused persistent high blood pressure. At the same time, I was worried about the risk of recurrence, so I felt unable to stop the medication and struggled with what to do. Through IMC, I scheduled an online consultation with a respiratory specialist at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Japan and sought a second opinion. The conclusion was that, because my cancer was detected at an early stage, taking molecular targeted drugs would not change my survival rate. The doctor clearly showed me the relevant data and spent nearly an hour explaining everything in detail. After the consultation, I felt truly reassured and relieved. I was deeply impressed by the doctor’s careful, thorough explanation and compassionate approach.

    Second Opinion for Client A

Post-operative lung cancer (2 years) — Consultation at St. Luke’s International Hospital

After undergoing surgery one year ago, the tumor recurred. I was told in Canada that a second surgery was not possible. However, Dr. Maruyama, a renowned glioma surgeon at Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital, agreed to perform the operation. The surgery was extremely challenging, but it was successful. Following the operation, I am now continuing treatment with chemotherapy and molecular targeted therapy. Although there are still many difficulties to overcome, receiving treatment in Japan has given me both hope and the courage to move forward.

      Surgery for Client B

Recurrent brain glioma after surgery — Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital

Despite undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy at hospitals in my home country, my condition could not be controlled. The tumor was pressing on the nerves in my leg, causing such severe pain that I could not sleep at night. I was reaching the limit of what I could endure and was close to giving up. At that time, I learned that a new treatment option was available in Japan. Believing it might be my last chance, I decided to travel there. I still remember the nurses’ tearful expressions when they first saw me arrive in a wheelchair. I underwent a combination therapy using molecular targeted drugs and immune checkpoint inhibitors, which was still in clinical trials at the time. Within the first week, the pain in my leg gradually began to ease, and being able to sleep again was the greatest relief of all. I continued the treatment, and little by little, the pain disappeared and my spirits grew brighter. I began to believe, deep in my heart, that I could overcome cancer. Three months after treatment, a PET-CT scan showed that the cancer was completely gone. I was overwhelmed with joy—it felt almost unbelievable. The doctor also rejoiced, calling it a miracle. Choosing this treatment saved my life, and I remain deeply grateful to this day.

        Immunotherapy for Client C

Stage IV Endometrial Cancer — National Cancer Center of Japan

An 8 mm nodule was discovered in my right lung during a routine health check. My local doctor recommended observation, but I was extremely worried and wanted to seek the opinion of an overseas specialist. After extensive research, I arranged a second opinion with Professor Ohira at Tokyo Medical University Hospital in Japan. His assessment was that there was a 90% likelihood of malignancy and that surgical removal would be appropriate. I decided to proceed with surgery. One month later, I underwent surgery at a hospital in my home country. The pathological results confirmed malignant adenocarcinoma, stage IA. The doctor told me that it was detected at a very early stage and that there was little concern about recurrence. I have since been maintaining my immune health through immunotherapy, and three years have passed without any recurrence. Looking back, Professor Ohira’s opinion was invaluable. Because I chose surgery at that time, I am now living a healthy and active life.
